Allison Transmission is a United States based manufacturer of automatic transmissions and hybrid propulsion systems that cater towards commercial duty applications. With their offered products, Allison Transmission serves buses, military vehicles, construction, distribution, specialty applications, and much more.
Allison Transmission was first established in 1909 by James A. Allison and three partners, and their first project included the funding and construction of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Once the track was finished, the speedway held the first Indianapolis 500 mile race in 1911. With the formation of their own team and the success of the track, Allison Transmission quickly garnered popularity for their automotive technologies.
During World War I, Allison Transmission suspended their racing operations so that they could produce various parts, tools, and masters for aircraft engines in order to support the war effort. After the war, the company once again returned to racing, though it was short-lived as the company soon after decided to pivot their focus to aviation. In 1928, General Motors purchased Allison Transmission, and the company set forth on developing a 12-cylinder engine to replace the Liberty aircraft engine. This new model, named the V1710, would establish Allison Transmission as a major aviation force in the world.
Towards the end of World War II, Allison Transmission began to work on automotive applications once again, producing power transmissions that were implemented within tracked military vehicles. To assist in the advanced operations of such vehicles, their power transmissions are designed to combine steering, braking, and range changes. After the war and leading into the present, Allison Transmission has set their focus on civilian transportation, manufacturing transmissions and parts for delivery trucks, buses, and other locomotives.
