AM general has a history that can be traced back to the early 1900’s, forming through various acquisitions and expansion of companies that existed beforehand. AM General itself was first established in 1971 when AMC made their recently acquired Jeep division a wholly owned subsidiary and renamed it AM General Corporation. Soon after, in 1983, AM General began working on an Army contract to manufacture 55,000 Humvees, those of which reached over 280,000 produced units by 2012. Through the 1980’s and 1990’s, AM General oversaw many internal changes, such as selling their Hummer brand to General Motors in 1999, as well as their own acquisition by The Renco Group, Inc. in 2002. In 2008, AM General was contracted to produce taxi-cabs, and only two years later they were also chosen to create Azure Dynamic Corp.’s Ford Transit Connect vehicles utilizing electric drivetrains. Currently, AM General continues to manufacture vehicles for the US Army and develop products for defense applications.
