IBM was first formed in 1911 through the amalgamation of four companies owned by Julius Pitrap, Alexander Dey, Herman Hollerith, and William Bundy. Charles Ranlett Flint helped amagate the companies into the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) and it was based in New York. Their company initially began with the sale and leasing of machinery, though they later began to widen their product portfolio. In 1914, Thomas J. Watson, Sr. joined CTR from the National Cash Register Company and became president after only 11 months. In his first years, CTR’s revenue greatly increased, and the company began expanding overseas. In 1924, the company was rebranded as International Business Machines, and later simply IBM by 1933. In 1956, IBM took its first step in artificial intelligence as they developed a personal computer to learn and improve from playing checkers. During the 1960’s, IBM also supported space exploration and missions. Through the 1960’s and 1970’s, IBM entered the computer market, developing mainframe computers and operating systems. One of their engineers, George J. Laurer, also created the Universal Product Code in 1974. In the 1990’s, IBM faced some hardships and restructured their business at the turn of the century, including selling their personal computer business to Lenovo and developing more artificial intelligence. Leading up to the present, IBM has worked with many companies through partnerships, acquired businesses, and developed various business segments.
