Nokia Corporation is a Finnish multinational company that focuses on telecommunication equipment, networking equipment, and consumer electronics. Based out of Espoo, Finland, Nokia employs over 98,000 employees to serve their global set of business and consumer markets. As a public limited company, Nokia is traded on both the Helsinki Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.
Nokia traces its long history back to 1865 when a mining engineer by the name of Fredrik Idestam established a pulp mill near Tampere, Finland. After the establishment of a second pulp mill in 1868, Idestam and his friend Leo Mechelin formed a shared company named Nokia Ab. After the retirement of Idestram in 1896, Mechelin assumed the position of chairman and pushed the company towards electricity generation.
During the early 1900s, Nokia partnered with rubber manufacturer Finnish Rubber Works and Kaapelitehdas, and the three companies merged together in 1967 to create Nokia Corporation. With the establishment of the new company, Nokia restructured their operations to feature forestry, cable, rubber, and electronics as their primary divisions. Over the following decades, the company would enter new markets and partnerships, eventually pushing further into electronics through acquisitions during the 1980s.
With the acquisition of the mobile telephony company Mobira, Nokia established the foundation of their future mobile phone segments. During the economic fallout following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the splitting and sale of various divisions from Nokia, the company undertook major restructuring initiatives to push further into telecom-oriented operations. Since then, Nokia has quickly risen in the ranks of mobile phone development, proving to be a global leader during the 1990s and 2000s with their innovations. Currently, Nokia has begun exploring new market sectors once again and have continued their focus on mobile phones with the development of 5G technologies.
