The Sumitomo Corporation serves as a member of the Sumitomo Group, those of which trace their history back to a 17th century book and medicine shop opened by Masatomo Sumitomo in Kyoto, Japan. Riemon Soga, Sumitomo’s brother-in-law, began extracting silver from copper through a technology he developed, and Soga’s son, Tomomochi Sumitomo, helped the smelting business grow in Osaka where they began copper mining. During this time, their business also expanded in sectors such as textiles, sugar, and medicine. Their family had close ties to the Tokugawa shogunate who was warring with western Japanese rivals at the time, and as the shogunate fell, the Sumitomo business began to suffer as well. During this time, Tomomochi Sumitomo began to utilize western techniques in order to improve upon their mining, and this initiative quickly turned their business around with great success in trading, manufacturing, and financing. In 1919, Sumitomo became incorporated as The Osaka North Harbour Co., Ltd. and their operations included real estate, land reclamation and grading, harbor repair, and other services in Osaka. In 1944, The Osaka North Harbour Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Building Co., Ltd. merged to become Sumitomo Building and Real Estate Co., Ltd. As Japan entered WWII, many Sumitomo buildings and industrial infrastructure was destroyed, and their businesses were subsequently split up during the Allied occupation, along with many other large Japanese companies at the time. During occupation, their business would serve as a smaller general trading firm with only 32 personnel. In the 1950’s, Sumitomo became closer again with the various Sumitomo Group companies, and over the next twenty years, they would begin expansion, entering into foreign markets, establishing new offices, increasing their transactional offices, and later renaming themselves the Sumitomo Corporation in 1978. In recent years, the Sumitomo Corporation has announced that their main focus would be on automotive, infrastructure, and other non-resource businesses.
Sumitomo has partnered with ArcelorMittal, ispace, inc., Unicharm, ITM Power, TruTag Technologies, and the Alliance to End Plastic Waste. The Sumitomo Group’s subsidiaries include SCSK and the TBC Corporation.
Sumitomo’s competitors include Seaboard, Asahi Kasei, Toyota Tsusho and Mitsui & Co.
