TI’s history began in the 1930's with the formation of a seismic exploration service provider by the name of Geophysical Service Inc (GSI). Soon after, the company was reorganized as an oil company under the name of Coronado Corp, while GSI became a subsidiary. After World War II, the company was reformed once again as Texas Instruments with GSI as a subsidiary as they had been providing electronics for the US Army, Signal Corps, and the US Navy. Through the early 1950’s, Texas Instruments (TI) entered the semiconductor industry after purchasing a germanium transistor patent license, as well as brought various industry experts into their company to begin research and manufacturing. The rest of the 1950’s proved very fruitful for TI as they developed the first workable silicon transistor, transistor radio, as well as the world’s first integrated circuit. Their prowess did not slow down in the 1960’s as they went on to develop the first handheld calculator, as well as continued to create powerful TI chips. At this time,. some of their components were even utilized for the Apollo Lunar Exploration Module.
As their technology grew smaller in size, more powerful, and more affordable, TI found themselves as a major consumer electronics firm by the early 1970’s. From the 1950’s and continuing through the 1970’s, TI oversaw significant expansion in their various market sectors, as well as conducted overseas growth as they reached into new foreign markets. The 1970’s also saw TI’s patent on a single-chip microprocessor, development on speech synthesis chips, entrance in the home computer market, and growth in their defense sectors.
In the 1980’s, TI entered the realm of artificial intelligence, worked on missile contracts, as well as introduced and dominated the DSP market. Leading into the new century, TI focused on the expansion of their product portfolio, acquired businesses and technologies, as well as continued their overseas growth. During this time, TI also began to consolidate their business, selling off sectors such as their defense sector, leaving themselves with their semiconductor and educational technology divisions. Recently, as of 2015, TI serves as the world’s biggest analog technology manufacturer, third biggest semiconductor manufacturer, and second biggest cell phone chip supplier.
