Cummins was first founded in 1919 and began with the acquisition of the first floor of a former cereal mill for a means of product production. In 1924, Cummins began the production of the Model F engine, beginning their long trek of engine innovation. In 1928, Cummins released the Model U which served as a great advancement to their previous engines, and only a year later they also introduced the single disc fuel system and the Model K. Over the next few years, vehicles equipped with Cummins engines would show greatly improved performance, even breaking records for treks from New York to California in some instances. Cummins even revolutionized the highway truck market in 1932 with the Model H engine, allowing busses to cross the United States in only 78 hours of running time. In 1947, Cummin went public with their stock trading, joining the New York Stock Exchange. Cummins then began their overseas expansion in 1956, opening a plant in Scotland and then in South America in 1959. The following decader saw Cummins continuing foreign expansion, creating business alliances, and an entrance into the natural gas market. Leading up to the 2000’s, Cummins made many innovations for their product lines, even branching out into electronics. In the year 2000, Cummins became the first to develop Variable Geometry Turbines. Up to the present, Cummins has continued to develop their product portfolio as well as endeavored to find new ways to continue their green technology, social initiatives, and sustainability efforts.
