About Hewlett Packard Co (HP)

Hewlett-Packard, or HP as it is commonly referred to, began in the wake of the Great Depression when Bill Hewlett and David Packet graduated from Stanford University in 1935 and began work in a small garage in Palo Alto, California. Their first successful product was a precision audio oscillator which they were able to produce and sell as a cheaper and more stable alternative to the products of their competitors. One of their first customers was a sound engineer from Walt Disney Studios who desired their audio oscillators for use on the movie Fantasia. During World War II, HP continued to grow as they developed technology that could be used for the war effort.

During the 1960’s, HP became the symbolic founder of Silicon Valley and worked on semiconductor devices, as well as partnered with Sony and Yokogawa Electric for developing HP products in Japan. From 1966 and into the 1970’s, HP entered the computer market and competed with IBM as they continued developing their various technologies. By the 1980’s, HP began their production on printers and scanners, and during this time they began releasing their popular LaserJet line. In the 1990’s, HP continued their computer product line, expanding and developing technologies such as scientific instruments, semiconductors, optical networking devices, and more.

By the early 2000’s, HP saw a doubling in size, as well as a merger with Compaq which helped them become a major competitor in the desktop, laptop, and server markets. During the years leading up to 2015, Hewlett-Packard continued various technology developments and acquisitions in their various sectors. On November 1, 2015, Hewitt-Packard split into two companies; Hewlett-Packard becoming HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise becoming a new publicly traded company. In recent years, Hewlett-Packard, as HP Inc., has dived into the video game market with specialized laptops and desktops such as the Omen and Envy series, specialized for gaming consumers.
