About MD Helicopters

MD Helicopters, Inc., previously known as McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems, is an American manufacturer of light utility helicopters that serve both commercial and defense applications. Headquartered in Mesa, Arizona, the company serves as a subsidiary of Patriarch Partners, LLC. For their helicopter offerings, their most well-known models include the MD 500, MD 600, and MD Explorer.

MD Helicopters was first established in 1947 and initially served as a business unit of Hughes Aircraft. Over the following decades, MD Helicopters would trade hands multiple times, becoming a part of Hughes Tool Company and later Summa Corporation in 1955 and 1972 respectively. In 1981, the company was renamed Hughes Helicopters Inc. and was sold to McDonnell Douglas three years later.

As a newly established subsidiary of McDonnell Douglas, Hughes Helicopter was renamed once again to McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems. In 1997, however, McDonnell Douglas and Boeing underwent a merger, and Boeing later sold off the subsidiary helicopter company to MD Helicopter Holdings Inc. As commercial performance proved detrimental after the acquisition, the company was purchased again by Patriarch Partners, to whom MD Helicopters, Inc. remains under today. With their new parent company and name, MD Helicopters, Inc. continues to manufacture their various models in the present, serving a diverse set of global customers in commercial and defense markets.

• Helicopters: MD Helicopters manufactures helicopters that serve a variety of applications and industries, and some of these models include the MD 500E, MD 520N, MD 530F, an armed variant of the MD 530F, MD 530G, MD 600N, and the MD 902 Explorer.
