Harley-Davidson, Inc.’s story began in 1903 as William Harley, Arthur Davidson, and Walter Davidson experimented with motor bicycles. By 1904, they had a working prototype and began advertisement and sales of the vehicle the following year. During World War I, Harley-Davidson produced motorcycles for the war effort, and by the 1920’s they were the largest motorcycle manufacturer. Through the Great Depression, Harley-Davidson continued development of motor vehicles. World War II began another big effort by Harley-Davidson to produce US Army motorcycles, and this led to a great increase in their reputation and product portfolio. From the 1980’s and through the 1990’s, Harley-Davidson restructured their company and began to develop motorcycles with a more retro look. This proved successful, and the company continued development during their expansion. Leading up to the present, Harley-Davidson has continued to develop different motorized bikes including bicycles, motorcycles, and more.
