The National Item Identification Number (NIIN) is a nine digit identification code for parts in circulation throughout NATO and many other countries. The nine digits are constructed in this manner: 12-345-6789. NIINs can also be listed without hyphens. The first two digits of the NIIN refer to the country where the part was first codified. This may not necessarily be the country of final manufacture, but the first country to recognize it as an important item of supply. The final 7 digits are a unique code that differs in each individual part. A common misconception about the NIIN vs. NSN is that they are different codes. In fact, The NIIN is part of the National Stock Number, or NSN. The NSN is a 13-digit code which includes the NIIN and serves as a means of identifying standardized material items of supply. The coding system is recognized by all NATO countries and many non-NATO countries such as Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
