Sanyo’s history first began in 1947 when Toshio Iue was lent a Matsushita plant to create bicycle generator lamps. Two years later, Sanyo was officially incorporated and began producing plastic radios and pulsator-type washing machines, both being the first of their kind in Japan. By the 1970’s, Sanyo entered foreign markets such as North America with car stereos and other home electronics, aided by advertising campaigns that were launched at the time. In the early 1980’s, Sanyo entered into the computer market, but soon halted the endeavor only a few years later. During this time and through the 1990’s, Sanyo also continued developing their company, diversifying their product portfolio with video technology such as VHS and DVDs. After the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake, Sanyo underwent a large restructuring and began focusing on new products, such as batteries. This endeavor quickly became profitable, and Sanyo still remains one of the top manufacturers of rechargeable batteries to this day. In 2008, Sanyo had their mobile phone sector sold to Kyocera, as well as their semiconductor division to ON Semiconductor in 2010. A year prior in 2009, Sanyo had become a subsidiary of Panasonic. Currently, Sanyo continues to develop batteries, televisions, and other electronics as a subsidiary company.
Sanyo has partnered with Arrow, Volkswagen, Cycore, Tech Data, Buffalo Bills, and more during their company history.
Sanyo’s competitors include Nidec, Yaskawa Drives, Johnson Electric, Emerson Electric, Rockwell Automation, Siemens, ABB, Maxon, Lenze and Danfoss.
