Seagate Technology PLC, often referred to simply as Seagate, is a United States manufacturer of computer storage devices. While Seagate is incorporated in Dublin, Ireland, its headquarters are currently situated in Fremont, California, United States.
Seagate was first established in 1978 as Shugart Technology, and they began their operations with the development of 5.25-inch HDDs. Soon after their formation, the company rebranded themselves as Seagate Technology to distance themselves from Shugart Associates, a Xerox subsidiary formed by the Seagate founder. In 1980, Seagate released their first product, that of which was a hard disk that contained 5 megabytes of storage. Soon after, Seagate released a 10 megabyte version and became an OEM supplier to IBM. Leading into the 1990s, Seagate conducted corporate restructuring and acquisitions in order to meet the changing market. As the new century began, Seagate set their focus on mainframe drives and partnered with companies such as Corning Inc. to spearhead technology development.
Leading into their privatization in 2000, Seagate continued to release powerful computer storage devices as they expanded their operations through acquisitions. In 2002, Seagate was listed on the New York Stock Exchange and became public once again, as well as reentered the HDD market for notebook computers and apple products. As of the present, Seagate continues to expand upon their technology and offerings, recently showcasing the largest SSD device manufactured by the company in 2016.
Seagate has partnered with Cloudian, Everspin Technologies, Inc., Tape Ark, Sony Entertainment, Inc., StorONE, Corning Inc., Dahua Technology, and others during their operational history. Seagate also owns various subsidiaries such as LaCie, ActionFront Data Recovery Labs Inc., Seagate Technology International, Archive Corp., Seagate Technology, and more.
