A New Technology for Safer Flight

The 21st century has seen the aviation industry take incredible technological strides. These advancements have contributed to aircraft speed, environmental friendliness, comfort, and safety. A prime example of the advances in safety is the Dassault EASy II, the advanced flight deck on the Dassault Falcon. This blog will cover the EASy II in detail, as well as a few of the many sub-components within the system that offer safer flight.

As stated, the EASy II is the next generation of Dassault Falcon’s advanced flight deck. The newest avionics suite in Dassault Falcon’s EASy series represents a major upgrade and a significant step forward. With improvements based on advancements in technologies as well as feedback from consumers, the EASy II comprises new features and options which further enhance situational awareness, safety, and efficiency. The EASy is the most advanced flight deck available today, and the EASy II has added even more functionality to meet the needs of current and future pilots.

The system was developed from technologies used in Dassault’s defense products to deliver an intuitive and performance-enhancing flight experience. The EASy is based on the Honeywell Primus EPIC avionics platform and allows pilots to use a Cursor Control Device and menu-driven selections to make heads up data entry. The Cursor Control Device provides unparalleled simplicity for pilots in any situation.

The features of the EASy II combine to provide a more effective work environment. By limiting the time spent entering data into the flight management system, and offering a common workspace for the crew to more cohesively work, the EASy enhances accuracy. The main benefits of the EASy II include the intuitive user-machine interface, improved crew coordination, enhanced situational awareness, reduced pilot workload, and enhanced pilot information.

Falcon 7X Digital Flight Control System

One important aspect of the EASy II is the Falcon 7X Digital Flight Control System (DFCS). Dassault’s expertise in fly-by-wire technology led to the development of this flight control system, the first of its kind in business aviation. Developed from decades of experience in combat aircraft, the DFCS was not only the first flight control system used in business jets, it raised the standards for reliability, safety, and integration to new heights. It provides a seamless relationship between pilot and aircraft, offering the smoothest and most comfortable ride for passengers in addition to increased safety and efficiency.

It does this through precise flight path control. Once the pilot inputs a command, the DFCS uses the most efficient combination of control surfaces to smoothly and efficiently direct the airplane in the desired path. In addition to this, the DFCS features built-in protections allowing pilots to safely bolster the Falcon’s performance in critical flight phases without exceeding the flight envelope. Furthermore, it is able to minimize turbulence and offer a more comfortable journey for all those onboard. Other features of the Falcon 7X DFCS include automatic trim adjustments during configuration changes, as well as basic autopilot functions through the cockpit’s side-stick controller for setting heading and attitude.

Synthetic Vision System

Another feature of the EASy II flight deck is the Falcon Synthetic Vision System (SVS), which creates a realistic image of your surrounding terrain in simulated daylight VFR conditions. It achieves this through the use of HUD symbology and highly sophisticated 3D terrain simulations. This allows the pilot to see their exact position and situation even when they are in an instruments position at an unfamiliar destination.

Coordinated Symbology

A further triumph of the EASy II is its unprecedented symbology between the heads-up and heads-down displays. The streamlining of these displays ensures that whether you are looking up or down, you will see the same layout, icons, and images. This is a feature unique to the Dassault Falcon and can prove critical in tight situations.

Enhanced Navigation Package

Yet another major advantage of this flight deck is a package of technologies with advanced and dynamic navigational capabilities. Among these are:

  • WAAS/LPV GPS guidance which provides horizontal and vertical guidance down to 200ft, near CAT I minimum approach, so pilots can use non-ILS runways with greater safety margins.
  • RNP/SAAAR for a more direct approach, allowing for access to more airports and airspace and thereby allowing pilots to fly shorter routes, saving time and fuel.
  • XM Weather, using NexRad satellite imagery, gives you NexRad Weather, Winds Aloft, Storm Tops, and Lightning and Clear Air Turbulence. Pilots can actively plan, even during flight, for flight deviations to avoid inclement weather.
  • Automatic Descent Mode, which activates in the event of cabin depressurization at high altitudes. The aircraft will automatically descend to 15,000ft where there is sufficient oxygen for recovery of the crew and passengers.
  • Runway Awareness Advisory System (RAAS) providing voice alerts to enhance awareness on the runway and in the air. It also confirms your airport position.

Beyond these amenities, EASy II also features CPDLC with FANS 1A, Paperless Charts, Full TOGA Mode, improved FMS, Second Electronic Checklist and much more.

Enhanced Vision System

Finally, the Dassault Falcon’s completely integrated Enhanced Vision System improves situational awareness during takeoff, approach, landing, as well as during ground manoeuvring at busy airports. It provides an image on the Heads-up Guidance System and on-flight deck displays. This assists pilots in seeing the terrain and airport environment in low-visibility conditions including fog, haze, and darkness. Furthermore, the Falcon EVS uses LCD HUD technology offering features that are not available on other systems. For instance, a clearer and brighter video presentation with a unique multi-mode setting optimizes the video for either an approach configuration or a general-purpose configuration. The EVS also uses InfraRed video processing designed specifically to minimize artifacts and distortion.
